ukrainians have been fighting bureaucratically, not with weapons, since 2007, 2008 for nato membership, for eu membership. it is actually we talk about nato so much, but ukraine s membership in the eu hugely important. explain why. no, you re exactly right indeed, joe. when you go back to 2014, it was the desire of the part of ukraine to many of the people to join the eu that in many cases brought about the earlier russian intervention because what vladimir putin wanted to stop was ukraine s westward drift, if you will, from his point of view. the eu represents anchoring in a club of democracies, market-oriented economy. so in some ways i think this could be more significant. nato is not going to happen, but now that you have the eu talking about accelerating an entry plan, that would be essential. but for anchoring ukraine in the
tidal cycles here coming up. that would be the second highest tidal cycle ever behind hurricane hugo, john? all right, chad, thank you very much. and some 200,000 people have already moved off the coast of south carolina to get out of the way. that s how much concern there is right now in south carolina as this storm heads their way. our thanks to chad for that. let s go now to the national hurricane center. director ken graham joins us now. thank you as always for being with us. we were speaking to one of your hurricane hunters a short time ago who said from the air they were seeing signs of a westward drift for which means places like south carolina could see something worse. some of that drift occurs when you just start marching northward. still not very fast, john. but look at the forecast. even though it s off the coast now, it s dangerously close to south carolina, north carolina

director of the hurricane center live in miami. this northward track i guess if that continues, southern southwest collier county, is this it? there s no way we will escape to this point. irma is closing in less than 50 miles away. it is effecting that area as we speak. shepard: the worst of it, marco island, everglades city and north into naples. yes, that is correct. naples is just to the north of that and it will continue to spread into the sarasota area in the tampa area into tomorrow. shepard: i wonder about four miles in cape coral and the rest of that on the coast. is there anything to indicate the northward movement would continue or stay offshore? at this point it looks like where they continue possibly with the slight westward drift. this is going to be just off shore or just unsure of the
