Westport Chamber of Commerce say they are gearing up to welcome back visitors to the town Published: Wednesday, 12 May 2021 15:27 Businesses in Westport are doing all they can to prepare for welcoming back visitors to the town in a safe manner - that s according to the Westport Chamber of Commerce. While inter-county travel is allowed from  this week, hotels and B&B s do not open until the 2nd June, followed by outdoor dining the following week. Helen Gavin of Westport Chamber is looking forward to a strong July and August, welcoming domestic tourists to the town. However, with no international visitors for 15 months, she says Westport has had a difficult time - particularly since the lockdown introduced just after Christmas.

Westport chosen for Irish Water s sustainable towns initiative

Mayo, has been chosen by Irish Water to pilot the new ‘Sustainable Water Towns Initiative’. The project is in partnership with business network Chambers Ireland. The initiative is being rolled out by Irish Water following the launch of the ‘Certified Water Stewardship Programme’ last month. The aim of the project is to support businesses to drive down water consumption, Irish Water says. As part of the pilot, members of Westport Chamber (a member of Chambers Ireland) have taken a ‘water conservation pledge’ ahead of a ‘masterclass on water conservation for businesses’ being delivered by Irish Water this week.

Westport s Russ Hart honored for service to American Legion, town

WESTPORT  When one thinks of the “greatest generation” or World War II Generation,Russ Hart is one of the first people to come to mind, according to state Rep. Paul Schmid.  Many Westporters, like Schmid, appear to feel the same about Hart, 92, a Renaissance man who has served his community in many ways.  Hart spent four years on active duty in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955, with three of those spent in Europe.  He joined the town’s American Legion Post 145 in 1971 and was honored on Monday, March 15, for 50 years of service to the post.  But service to his country and working with local veterans are only part of the Russ Hart story.

The owner of The Towers gastropub on the Westport s quay knows this precious outdoor space is the key to his future in business, when and if he can open. I weatherproofed the garden because when Covid came I lost one third of my indoor seating, he told RTÉ’s This Week. Tom put down an astroturf floor and put up a stretch tent to cover part of the garden. He also installed heating and lighting, extending his gastropub by a further 80 seats.
