Leigh-on-Sea bathing centre in 1921 a great asset for town

The sun was shining and the crowds were out - this photograph shows the day the Leigh Bathing Station opened a century ago. The deluxe swimming facility, costing £4,500, was located on the seafront at Leigh, exactly three-and-a-half-miles from Southend Pier up the road. The mayor of Southend, Alderman John Francis, officially declared the bathing centre open in May of 1921. For once the residents and bathing enthusiasts of Leigh were pleased that their end of the seafront was getting a new facility, with the pier and the Kursaal in Southend already taking up so much time and money. The opening day featured a swimming gala and displays from talented swimmers and elementary school children from Leigh, Southend and Westcliff followed by a water polo match.
