competitive race for the democratic nomination. you haven t announced yet, but can you give us a sense of where you stand with those numbers. i got in really late, jim, so my numbers aren t going to be what mayor buttigieg s was or are. we re doing really well. we had a great roll out. i like our chances. we ve had a huge uptick since the debate because i was the one who was really bringing the conversation back to the working class issues. this is going to be about who can beat donald trump. and a congressman 17 years from ohio that can win ohio, michigan, wisconsin, western p.a. is going to be on everybody s radar screen and people are starting to notice this. and also what i talked about with winning the senate back. i can beat donald trump. i will take him to task and i can help us build the senate back up to have a democratic majority. that s what people are going to look at. and the reality of it is they want someone who is going to
directly from the policies of this president, the deliberate policies of this president. you know, there was some passion in the immigration discussion, but it was passion disconnected from the cause of the tragedy. donnie, don t go. i ve got to go back to chris mathews who has one of the people we ve just been talking about, congressman ryan in ohio. thank you so much, brian. tim ryan, you talked in a way that the other democrats didn t tonight. you talked about working people in the not cool parts of the country, not from the coast, not from the ivy league. i thought you talked about how you can actually win an election against donald trump. yeah, get into the industrial midwest, connect the working class people, change the brand of the party away from the coast and the ivy leagues. that s not going to work for us against donald trump. if you want to win western p. a. and ohio, of course. if you want to win the senate bianca, your brand better be work for the working class. w
stuff. my argument to the people at home and democrats looking to vote in this election as nominee is who better to prosecute the economic case against donald trump that somebody to the area that lied to all of the people, all of the workers, those are my folks. white, black, brown, gay, straight, working class people he lied to. i believe i m best positioned to make that economic argument against donald trump and make the argument on behalf of the workers and say we can do better than this. oh, by the way, we have to win western p.a., we have to win ohio, we have to win michigan, we have to win witness witnesco play offense on iowa. my idea is let s switch the center of gravity from the democrats to the coast of the e ivy league schools to youngstown, ohio. and go to kentucky, which isn t far from where i m from and take
barack obama, for example, would biden be of interest to them? no the terribly excited by joe biden. one insight. from the four locations visited in wisconsin, ohio, iowa and northern western pa, we have 33 people who voted obama and then trump. only 13 of those 33 people want barack obama back if they had a choice between obama and trump. in other words, if trump ran against obama in a head-to-head race, 13 of those 33 positive wan barack obama. the other 20 would stay with donald trump. and a lot of people including other candidates who said about joe biden, look, his polling is about name recognition, but in terms of the enthusiasm, we re not seeing it on the ground. we re not seeing the kind of, for example, people turning out that come out spontaneously for a mayor pete or elizabeth warren. what s your takeaway from this focus group? well, my takeaway, chris, i think democrats can win back these voters. e were saw in the 2018 midterms
iowa. that doesn t make sense. so i think it s not the right way to go about it. reporter: do you think the dnc should have a climate change focus debate? i do. i do. i think it s one of those issues critically important and we should definitely have one. to mees a jobs program, too. i would love to be in that debate and talk to people in ohio, michigan, wisconsin, western pa about building electric vehicle, solar panels. opportunity for jobs in this economy and an opportunity to reconnect with workers art and a des moines register poll comes out tomorrow. what s a good metric for you? where do you hope to be at when the poll comes out? i never thought 1% would be good, but in this field hanging on, only in a few weeks. y want to be as high as you possibly can and show movement. we ve been pretty consistent across the board at 1%. no iowa, grinding it out. got a long way to go. if people want someone who s going to give an economic
