triple digit temperatures and severe storms are threatening to wreck holiday weekend plans for millions of americans. cnn meteorologist allison chinchar is here with the latest. i hate that you have to be the bearer of bad news. yeah, and unfortunately if you ve got travel plans in or around nashville now is not really an ideal time. you ve got a strong line of thunderstorms starting to slide into the city as we speak. any travel on the major interstates like i-40, i-65, likely to have some delays as this line goes through. also, any airport travel would not be surprised if there s delays as the line begins to slide in. it s not the only area. that s the other thing to note. you ve still got showers and thunderstorms across the ohio valley, another cluster to the west of dallas. really as we go into the afternoon and continue into the
midwestern storms reloading after a violent 24 hours. and new york city covered in haze for a second day. the aqi, that is 155. still very hazy. and that is unhealthy for everyone. reporter: the big apple taking the top spot for the world s worst air for a major city. and across the south, record-breaking temperatures again. and even higher heat indexes. west of dallas in colorado city, texas, residents there have been without water for nearly a week. our mireya villareal in fort worth where first responders are strained and worried. with this happeninger in the season and the response volume being crazy, we re prepared for the worst the rest of the summer. reporter: the dome, more severe storms. overnight, winds gusting to 100 miles an hour in the midwest. a wall of thunderstorms we call a derecho downing trees and knocking out power across hundreds of miles. whit: rob marciano, you re watching those severe storms.
and the roads are turning white where ed is, and this is the swath though and hours and hours more of this. not only that, but i am going to change the colors and get you to what the real radar looks like. it is convection in here, and not only is it sleeting, but it is lightning as well. thunder sleet out there at this point in time, and this is going to start to pile up very, very quickly. that entire system is going to move to the northeast. this is the one through yesterday. and it is the one coming through dallas right now, but it is moving up into arkansas and places like kentucky and paducah and evansville, you are about to get into middle of it into arkansas and hot springs and across the ozarks, and difficult travel today. then the break, and then look to the west of dallas. another batchf this is coming in for tomorrow. right on top of the same places. i just looked. there is really not very many
high level. you look at some of the counties in east texas, or those around shelby county, tyler texas. you go west of waco, west of dallas, those counties have infection rates that are the highest in the world. we are the epicenter. the same with some of the counties in tennessee. so, we are the hotspots globally and that s the situation. not a proud moment, i would say. no, it s very upsetting. doctor, i want to talk to you. you mentioned you think that the president should make a visit and make a personal appeal. but axios is calling this essentially america s civil war of 2021. we re talking about such a high plateau, we re talking about this thing is still on fire. there s still a dire situation out there. do you have a picture of hope right now for where we can still be headed in this, given
telling the woman about lightning. what a catch that was done. that did not come from zeus, but the storm in florida. living up to its name as the lightning capital of the united states and more storms today. we could be looking at more lightning strikes across florida, but i wanted to focus in on another system that is from texas all the way to the great lakes. the reason is because there is a lot of extreme weather that has been occurring across parts of missouri and flash flooding and last night tornado warnings across kansas city and heavy rain across parts of texas through the west of dallas. locally more than six inches of rainfall that will be possible with the storm out here. the flooding will be a concern. they have several flash flood warnings in effect across texas and missouri because of flooding currently ongoing with the storm
