maryland. we have live team coverage on this emergency tonight. pat collins is looking at the situation. and now live in more on what happened in potomac. reporter: we are in the 8300 block [ muted ]. this was the scene along river road. river road, that type, did not have fiberoptic technology in it. this one does. reporter: this is actually an effort to avoid a break here at wssc, or more accurately curtis cummings. fiberoptic cables monitoring cables. this fiberoptic cable can listen, if you will, to the wires breaking, send us a signal. once we hit a certain threshold we know that the integrity is possibly being compromised. reporter: back in 2007, the water authority install this fiberoptic technology in some 35 miles of water mains throughout the distribution system. it allows them to hone in on a potential problem to within a 16-inch section of pipe. we are able to take a proactive repair in this case. reporter: they ll still have to shut off the
