Masking may make sense if you ve got a vulnerable person at home or work

CADILLAC — The sooner you get vaccinated, the sooner life can return to normal. It s been one of the pro-vaccination messages as soon as the vaccine opened up to the general adult population. Now, with kids age 12 to 15 eligible for the Pfizer version of the COVID-19 vaccine, there s another way to explain the same idea: One thing I would encourage parents to remember is that there were a lot of disruptions that kids experienced this year related to sports and school, said Lisa Peacock, health officer, Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department and Health Department of Northwest Michigan, during a Munson Healthcare press conference. Just like we always encourage you to get in for that sports physical early before fall sports start in August, we are going to encourage you to come in and get your children vaccinated early.

NMC s Hagerty Center Helps Get More Than 22,000 Residents Vaccinated

9 & 10 News June 9, 2021 Northwestern Michigan College announced today that more than 22,000 area residents were fully vaccinated against Covid-19 at NMC’s Hagerty Center. The four month partnership between the college and the Grand Traverse County Health Department will wrap up this week. The vaccination clinic opened on January 18 and was the first and, until late April, the only mass vaccination site in the county. It was integral to accelerating the pace of vaccinations in northern Michigan and considered a model statewide. As of June 4, Grand Traverse County had 59.1% of eligible residents vaccinated (65.8% had received an initial dose), among the top counties for vaccination coverage in the state.

Michigan s most-vaccinated counties prepare to welcome waves of tourists

Credit Pure Michigan Grand Traverse County has the second-highest COVID-19 vaccination rate in Michigan, but in a few weeks, it’s hosting a festival that could bring in more visitors than the county has residents with no way to know how many of the tourists are vaccinated. That raises some thorny questions for health officials and event organizers in Grand Traverse and other tourist-heavy counties in Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula: How can they prevent festivals from becoming super-spreader events? How can they make sure their tourism industry doesn’t inadvertently infect their local population, while visitors who seed outbreaks get to go home without facing any consequences?

Teens are a growing part of the vaccinated population

CADILLAC — It s been three weeks since young teens age 12 to 15 have been able to be vaccinated against COVID-19. In that time, 19.4% of the state s population in that age bracket have had their first shot in a two-dose series; according to data from June 1, that means 96,379 young teens out of 497,959 have partial protection against the virus. Young teens are gaining on 16- to 19-year-olds, who have been eligible for the Pfizer vaccine since early April (the Moderna and Johnson and Johnson vaccines are still only for people 18 and older). Though school-age teenagers are about to leave school for the summer, early summer vaccination can put families in a good position to enjoy summer festivals, activities and the resumption of sports practices before next school year, health care professionals suggested during a recent Munson Healthcare-hosted press conference.
