Is the glass half full or is it half empty? With the Great Salt Lake shrinking and the Colorado River struggling to meet demands, it appears the glass is draining fast.
Last winter was huge, and water was plentiful this summer. Except that all summer long, I had a hard time getting irrigation water out of the North Fork of the Provo River and into a couple of ditches. One of the ditches flows year round, through a pasture and then on down to an adjoining property where there is a fish pond. Even in the worst drought year, there was flow there all year. This year it has gone dry.
The Great Salt Lake reached an all-time historic low last November and the Colorado River, described as the workhorse of the West, has demands that do not meet its supply.
The Summit Land Conservancy received the single largest grant it s ever been awarded earlier this month, allowing the accredited nonprofit to preserve more land than ever before.
