Scientists at the Pune-based National Centre for Cell Sciences have claimed to have identified two bacteria in the small intestine that can break gluten, to cure Celiac disease, an immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein found mostly in wheat, barley, and rye. Also known as celiac sprue or gluten-sensitive enteropathy, this condition triggers an instant immune response in the small intestine after eating gluten which damages the lining and prevents it from absorbing nutrients.
