WEST SPRINGFIELD ValleyBike, the Pioneer Valley’s short-term bike rental program, opened in West Springfield this week with two stations.
The stations are two of 20 new stations ValleyBike plans to add across its expanding network this year with a $1.1 million state and federal transportation grant, said Wayne Feiden, an administrator of ValleyBike in his role as director of planning and sustainability in Northampton.

NORTHAMPTON The city continued its talks on a long-term redesign of Main Street this week, drawing more than 100 people to a virtual public forum where residents and business owners discussed everything from parking, bicycle safety and traffic to accessibility, trees and climate change.
Mayor David Narkewicz described the project as a “once in a generation opportunity,” and said by the end of the year, the city hopes to finalize a plan for the project, which is expected to see more than $16 million in state and federal funding in fiscal 2025.

Downtown Northampton, where walkers and bikers intermingle with cars and buses among restaurants, retail shops and bars, is on its way to a major update.
City planners presented four options to the public Wednesday night for a redesign of a half-mile of Northampton’s social and economic center. Under the title “Picture Main Street,” the project would modify the sidewalks, traffic flow and landscape of the city center.

NORTHAMPTON The city has received a $250,000 state grant to support the development of affordable housing on the site of the former state hospital.
Mayor David Narkewicz said the state Housing Choice grant will be used to prepare two sites, one on Burts Pit Road and one on Laurel Street, for development.

Victoria Baeger thought she had found the perfect home.
It is old enough to have character with an unrestored charm, big enough for her husband and kids to spread out a little bit, situated in a good location and tricky in a market that was already hot in her price range.
Arriving for a showing, she didn’t really notice the cross over the front porch of 182 High St. in Greenfield.
