Neal Eugene Lewis – Wayne City

It is with great sadness that we announce the recent passing of Neal Eugene Lewis, 92, of Wayne City, IL. Neal passed away at 12:08am on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at his home. Neal was born on June 5, 1930, to Gene and Inez Lewis. He was raised on his family farm with his parents and his younger sister Mary. After graduating from Eldorado High School, Neal continued working on the farm and at the family-owned feed store and grocery store in Walpole, IL. In his early 20's, Neal enlisted in the Navy during the Korean War. He served from 1952-1956 as an Electrician's Mate Third Class, aboard a tanker ship and traveled to many countries. During one of his leaves at home, he married the love of his life, Evelyn Marie Pryor. They were married on November 22, 1953, in Eldorado, IL. After leaving the Navy, Neal went back to working with the family businesses and he and Evelyn started their family. Neal then joined the Illinois State Police where he served for 28 years. Fairfield Police are investigating a stolen municipal vehicle from the Fairfield Waste Treatment Facility on 09/28/22. The vehicle has been recovered. Officers have identified the juvenile suspects and the investigation is continuing with charges pending. The Wayne City Unit School District # 100 is conducting Child Find/Preschool Screenings today and tomorrow from 8:30am-2:30pm, at the Wayne City Baptist Church. This screening is for children Birth to 5-year-old not yet enrolled in public schools, and not kindergarten eligible for the 2022-23 school year, and checks each child's progress in hearing, vision, speech, language, and coordination skills, to give parents a better idea of how their child is progressing before he/she begins school. This program is free, and parents will receive immediate feedback on how their child is developing. Pre-K personnel will also be present to explain their program and other services available in the area. The screening procedure takes about 45 minutes, but appointments must be made. All Senior class students attending Wayne County Illinois high schools will have the opportunity to participate in the student class trip to Washington D.C. for the first time in four years. The last time 12th graders from Cisne, Fairfield, and Wayne City High Schools were able to take this annual trip to D.C was April, 2019, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This year's trip will be extended by an extra day for the first time, allowing the students to also tour Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, the amazing home and property of America's third President near Charlottesville, VA. This new feature will be part of the return trip home, following the Seniors' experience of many of the highlights of our Nation's Capital. This upcoming student trip is scheduled for April 20th - April 24th, 2023. The Bernard and Naomi L.
