In a statement, Brändström says that she’s “very excited to be guided through Middle-earth by JD’s and Patrick’s vision and immerse myself in the iconic world of J.R.R. Tolkien. It’s a great privilege to be in New Zealand to work with Amazon Studios’ outstanding ensemble of creative talents,” and that “there are countless things still to see in Middle-earth, and great works to do.
“
Word of Brändström’s arrival comes shortly after Amazon disclosed the staggering cost that it’s putting down for the series: $465 million for its first season, which is on top of the half-billion spent to secure the rights to the series in the first place. Amazon’s Jennifer Salke chalked the cost up to the price of world-building, saying that it is “building the infrastructure of what will sustain the whole series,” and that the studio is positioning the series as a global event, something they’re confident in. The show has already bee

While we wait for Amazon to show off any official footage or images from the show, one thing we know for sure is that it costs a lot of money to make. The budget for the first season is $465 million, according to some reports, which would make it the most expensive TV series ever.
During a recent roundtable with The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke explained why the series costs so much, and why Amazon thinks the price tag is worth it.
After over two years of development, a previously announced video game based on
The Lord of the Rings is no more. Amazon, Inc. announced the cancellation to Bloomberg, saying, “we have been unable to secure terms to proceed with this title at this time.” The spokesperson added “We love the
Lord of the Rings IP, and are disappointed that we won’t be bringing this game to customers.”
It was never clear whether or not the game would be based on Amazon’s upcoming TV series, or other parts of the franchise. But Amazon paid $250 million for the TV rights, setting the show budget at a record $465 million. It’s possible that a game tie-in might have required further royalties the company didn’t prepare for. Or additional negotiation with the Tolkien estate. The original TV deal allowed the estate certain unspecified creative restrictions.
