The diabetic foot ulcer that cost Otis Dahmer one of his little toes began with what appeared to be nothing more than dry, flaking skin.
Not being “much of a moisturizer guy,” Dahmer said, he didn’t give the skin much attention. He kept working on his feet, 10 or 11 hours a day, as a union electrician on an out-of-state job.
He later noticed an open spot, like a sore, wasn’t healing.
Dahmer, (pronounced day-mer), figured the location made it hard to heal, His feet aren’t too sensitive to pain, so he put off seeing a doctor.
“I probably went three weeks, until I couldn’t walk on it anymore,” he said.

LAKELAND, Fla. â Even after surviving COVID-19, itâs a long and bumpy road to recovery for many patients.
Nearly 36,000 people in Polk County have been infected by the coronavirus and survived, but surviving doesnât mean youâre in the clear.
âThis is not like influenza where you catch it, (and) two weeks later youâre pretty much back to normal ready to go back to work. This can be a very long-term illness,â explained Dr. Kathleen Haggerty.

Watson Clinic doctor opens post-COVID clinic in Lakeland
LAKELAND A Watson Clinic doctor has opened a post-COVID-19 clinic in Lakeland, inviting patients who may have been told they were imagining the virus long-term impact.
Dr. Kathleen Haggerty, an internal medicine specialist, said she wants to help those who are suffering from lingering COVID-19 symptoms, sometimes dubbed long haulers. My goal is to make my post-COVID-19 clinic obsolete by helping people to back to their normal lives, she said.
Haggerty said she s been voraciously following news reports and the latest scientific studies on the novel coronavirus since first hearing an NPR report on a mysterious illness out of Wuhan, China, roughly a year ago.
