More than 12,000 cases of COVID-19 were reported in Waterloo region in January alone. That represents a fraction of the total cases because not everyone could be tested for the virus. But local health officials say despite the challenging month, there were positive takeaways.
Wastewater data shows COVID-19 infections appear to have peaked in Waterloo region and are now declining. There were 133 people with the virus in the region's hospitals on Friday and 76 active outbreaks. There was also one COVID-related death reported.
Region of Waterloo Public Health reported five new COVID-related deaths in the community on Monday. As well, 146 people were in the region's three hospitals with the virus and 25 people were in ICU. There were 78 active outbreaks.
As of Thursday, Region of Waterloo Public Health has reported more than 10,000 new COVID-19 cases in the community this month alone, but it's considered only a fraction of actual case numbers because not everyone can be tested for the virus.
