Head coach Mike Bree and the Waterloo Indians girls basketball team had been on a tear the entire 2021 season bringing a 13-0 record into the Section V Class B2 championship game on Saturday night, a game they would host as the top seed of the postseason tournament. Waterloo had obliterated their opponents over the past five weeks with only one of the victories by less than double-digits (a seven point win at Midlakes on 2/15). The title game would pose their biggest challenge as they would face #2 Dansville. The Mustangs were coming off a sectional title victory over Pal-Mac last season and returned all the key contributors on their championship roster.

The marquee match-up of Thursday night’s sectional schedule was in the boys Class C1 semifinal as the #5 seed Marcus Whitman Wildcats took on #1 seed Lyons Lions. Both teams brought senior laden rosters and a very successful recent postseason track record. Marcus Whitman was attempting to defend last year’s championship, the school’s first in 44 years. Lyons was trying to win an unprecedented 4th straight sectional title. Something had to give and it did in the form of a brilliantly executed gameplan and timely shooting in favor of the Marcus Whitman Wildcats, 64-54.
