John LaMacchia, director of state and federal affairs for the MML, said Tuesday the board isn’t against the concept of assisting low-income have access to water but oppose the measures in the pending package.
The board’s Government Oversight Committee voted 7-5 to “table” a resolution that would express opposition to a package of bills in the state Senate and state House of Representatives to establish a statewide $2 per-month fee on water bills to help make water bills more affordable for low-income residents.
The city of Richmond recently became the latest municipality to oppose water affordability legislation in the state House and Senate, when the council adopted a resolution against the bills on Jan. 15.
Chesterfield Township has joined the growing list of communities and elected officials voicing opposition to a proposed statewide fee for a water affordability program.
