A draft Circular Economy Strategy, which outlines the need for targets to tackle food waste, has been submitted by deputy Richard Bruton to the Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action.
A circular economy thinking should become a “central spine of our climate planning” according to the Fine Gael TD.
Raising ambitions
Halve food waste within five years;
Halve the use of extracted raw material and residual waste by 2030;
No plastics to municipal incineration by 2030;
Double the size of the reuse sector within five years.
Deputy Bruton, who is the former Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, said: “Raising our ambitions to set higher climate action targets will require roadmaps in all sectors that rethink how we make and use products from raw materials to final product; from a product’s cradle to its grave.

Recoupable deposits of 20 cent on cans and bottles are set to return as part of a wider Government initiative to reduce the incidence of litter in Ireland.
Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications Eamon Ryan announced a total of over €8 million funding for litter prevention and anti-dumping in preparation for a summer in which most social activities will happen outdoors.

Doha: As part of its Qatar University Zero Waste Initiative (QUZW) initiative, the Facilities & General Services Department in Qatar University (QU) has succeeded in producing the first batch of fertilizer by converting food waste generated at the students’ housing.
This remarkable step advances the implementation of the QU Zero Waste Action Plan (2021 - 2025) for realizing the main goal of getting solid waste management practices in the campus aligned with the Qatar University Strategy (2018-2022).
The #QU Zero Waste initiative adopts the Circular Economy fundamentals and strives to minimize both virgin material inputs and waste outputs by closing organic resource flow loops (food waste). As the implementation of the action plan continues, more waste fractions are being managed wisely and responsibly to help realize the circular campus of the future.
