you ve been on the city council in troy. you were a state representative here in michigan. you ve been in politics and your tenure and politics started before politics felt like the swamp that it can feel like today. you were elected as a republican? correct i still yield towards the republican party but because it s been taken over by donald trump, i don t want to be affiliated with that sort of thing. the truth of the matter is i ve always been of an independent mind, and if you look at some of the things that they ve introduced when i was in the legislature i took a more washingtonian approach to politics. in other words i m not a big fan of political parties. in fact, i think that elected officials should be elected on a nonpartisan basis and stand for what they believe in and the electorate should be able to evaluate them based on the individual. it s a real herd mentality right now. you ve got the democrat votes and you ve got the republican folks, and they get elected, and the
floridians did, as well. but we got a little bit more notice. a little build further north in st. petersburg, so, that made that opportunity available and thank god for that. there are a plethora of things about this storm that scare even people who watch these storms and who have lived through them. the surge, the winds, the amount of rain that is expected to fall in large swaths of the state. when you weigh those dangers to life and property, which ones make you most concerned? frankly, all of them, to be honest. i mean, you know, the wind has been pretty extraordinary. when you get the bands and it gets up to the gusts that we ve heard a lot about today, you know, i saw what they call the washingtonian palm trees, they are very tall, they put down power lines. so, the wind has been extraordinarily significant. the flooding and the surge they re seeing south of us, south of tampa bay today, we ve seen some of the pictures that
coming to the wharf to eat and pick crab is a birthright as a washingtonian and a celebration of our identity. the wharf changed. 1963, everything is changing. they didn t have all this stuff. everything down here is brand spanking new. see, everything down here at the wharf is more other people. when i go to get my crabs because everybody down the wharf know me since 1963. i just turned 69, and i keep myself active. no matter how broke we were, we always had money for crab. i mean, i had my first beer while picking crab. and today we re diving right in. very nice. that s what i m talk about. hey, man. hey, how s it going? thanks. you want to cook, right? sure.
