We begin tonight with the Severe Weather outbreak just as the weekend begins. Tornadoes, then torrential rain and snow already beginning tonight. Storms blowing across the gulf coast into the deep south. That system will now reach right up the east coast. An outbreak of tornadoes with all this, including this one in mississippi. A tornado watch in several states at this hour. Another twister in indiana, tossing this car upsidedown. Rob marciano is standing by, but we begin with Steve Osunsami outside atlanta, where many were sheltering in place for a time as a reported tornado touched down. Reporter listen to that tornado siren. And take a look at how hard it was blowing today at Warner Robbins Airforce Base south of atlanta, in the middle of what the airmen here believe was a twister. Tornadoes, and there were more than one of them, were a half a mile across. Is that what youre hearing on the ground . Give us a sense of the scale of the destruction youre seeing there. Jim, thats right. As far as we can see here, and ill walk you down farther into this neighborhood in just a minute, it is complete and total destruction. Just yesterday, these cinderblocks over here were the foundation for a manufactured home. And now that home sits on the other side of me. Nearly on the street. Picked up and moved by that tornado. When it comes to the extent of this devastation, authorities tell us that they dont yet know the full extent. They havent yet been able to get a full aerial view to understand. Today, as search and rescue teams continue their work, there will also be helicopters going up in the air, drones that will be able to give more of that birdseye view and help them better understand what theyre working with. Searchers had to pause the rescue efforts last night too dangerous to do that in the dark. The damage is set to be catastrophic with homes destroyed. Thats what you are looking at right there. This is southeastern alabama here. About 100 miles southwest of atlanta. The sheriff of lee county down there says a tornado traveled along a state road leaving a path of destruction and for at least a mile long and a quarter mile wide. Now, one woman, listen to this. Im ana cabrera with breaking news. A dozen tornadoes reported across alabama and georgia. This is in lee county, alabama, right now. You can see people just taking in all of the damage there. Houses torn apart. Were learning at least two separate tornadoes hit within one hour. Initial reports where at least two people dead. The sheriff now saying there are a number of fatalities and many more people still unaccounted for. Lets get right over to cnn meteorologist tom sater in the cnn weather center.
