and in these battlefield provinces, where the war has been raging, incredible death tolls becoming face to face with a lot of the corruption we are talking about. my own reporting really reveals how embedded within everything the united states and the afghan government was doing in many of these areas. even if it was something as seemingly noble as education, or building health clinics, could be permeated by some of the same problems, allied with really dangerous war lords. who isolated the local population from the afghan government. so it really depends on who you are talking to. and that rural urban divide is really not focused on. there are so many reporters who come to afghanistan, stay in kabul, and that s where a majority of their sources are. , james laporta. . , france.
requires the cooperation of the taliban? yeah. this is where american leverage is going to be crucial. we only have a few lines of leverage left, frankly, that we can use with the taliban if we re not willing to use physical violence to expand perimeters and you ve gone into why that would be difficult and cost so many more american lives to do that. we have leverage with the taliban because they do want some international they want international aid coming in. about 80% of the budget was foreign assistance. as that assistance disappears, the taliban would like to have some of that foreign aid and top up for the budget back. they would like international recognition, and the trade and travel ties that go with it. the taliban in the 90s got their start in a lot of ways their street credit and backing from pakistan by opening up the various check points that afghan war lords closed off and opening up trade again from pakistan
governed. you ll have various war lords and isis groups and the other groups. the u.s. helped stabilize that peace and gave some semblance of order. the taliban will have a lot of the same thing but a lot of warring factions. that s the history hoff afghan stand and that region. neil: you think this raises the threat level in this country? in other words, that because of what s gone down there that we could be attacked again? yes, i do. i think the response to this, the response to the taliban s deadline, the fact that we re claudia was talking about it. the way you use deterrence is through strength. you have to have something to back up the idea of deterrence. if we re showing weakness, which we are here and we re allowing the taliban to dictate to us, that emboldens enemies and terrorism.
