south china sea and beijing is pushing back with fresh comment. tuesday this is what we heard from the u.s. military, they said a chinese fighter jet carried out a, quote, unnecessarily aggressive maneuver near u.s. military plane over the south china sea in international air space. the incident took place last week may 26. and video of the encounter has been released. this video was filmed from the cockpit of the u.s. corecogniza plane. and it those it against the clear blue sky. it is moving from right to left and then it cuts directly in front of the u.s. plane. and the u.s. plane advisably shakes. that is the result of the wake turbulence that was generated by that maneuver. now, the u.s. indo-pacific command says the plane was conducting safe and routine operations and added, quote, the united states will continue to fly, sail and operate safely and responsibly wherever international law allows,
here. the u.s. doesn t recognize that nor does many other countries. so the u.s. can fly there just like we saw this reconnaissance airplane. take a look at this video. this is on friday. the rc-135, again a reconnaissance airplane flying over the south china sea. that chinese jet cuts in front forcing it to fly through the wake turbulence and that taking is the shudder as the airplane passes through that turbulent air. we have seen chinese aircraft do this before. not against u.s. aircraft but others as well. back in december, another chinese fighter jet from the navy came within 20 feet of the nose of a similar aircraft. so the u.s. sees this as a pattern of aggressive behavior, but it s not just these aggressive interactions between u.s. and chinese military aircraft. the broader problem is a lack of communication between the sides. lloyd austin traveling in the
slices in front of the u.s. aircraft at fairly close range. that turbulence there is from wake turbulence off the back of that chinese fighter jet. the u.s. is calling this an aggressive maneuver, saying it was unsafe and unprofessional. we have seen intercepts like this, this sort of tension between chinese fighter jets and u.s. aircraft before. there was one in december, a different type of chinese fighter jet, but essentially the same situation. the u.s. said their fighter jet came within 20 feet of the same u.s. aircraft, rc 135. the u.s. insists they ll consider to operate in a safe and professional maneuver anywhere that international law allows. therein lies the dispute. for the u.s., airspace over the international sea is over international waters. china claims much of the south china sea as its own territorial waters. they believe the u.s. invading on their territorial position.
