Communities of questionable allure are once again in the running for the annual awards. But there's more to many finalists than first meets the eye.

If the 1886 Tarawera eruption was our version of Vesuvius, Te Wairoa is surely our homegrown mini-Pompeii. As the birthplace of New Zealand tourism, prior to 1886, moneyed Europeans flocked to these parts, to see, photograph, paint, sketch and bathe in the mineral waters of the legendary Pink and White Terraces. Te Wairoa was the staging post, from where they’d board a whaleboat, in their crinoline dresses and bowler hats, to cross Lake Tarawera to reach those tantalising terraces on Lake Rotomahana. At the time of the eruption, Te Wairoa was humming, home to 150 residents, two hotels, the Hinemihi meeting house, a church and school. It was the Tuhourangi people, a sub-tribe of Te Arawa, who owned most of the land in the area, astutely cashing in big-time on the booming tourist trade.

Comments A competitive card at Rosehill on Saturday where Polly Grey produced the highlight taking out the Listed Lord Mayors Cup. The six-year-old mare is set to head to the Gold Coast where she will be sold on Tuesday at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale but should Saturday’s contest have been her swansong, she ended her career adding another $76,500 to her career earnings. There were a couple of outstanding performances on Saturday – Charleise, Rebel Rama and Kirwan’s Lane while two runners-up were also excellent in defeat – Maranoa and Ellsberg. The track was rated a soft (5) surface throughout the day and it appeared favourable to race near the speed and save ground, back towards the inside coming into the straight.

The milder, mellow mornings and crisp winter walks capture Aotearoa in a different light. It is half of the year that doesn t get nearly its fair share but all that is about to change.
