The death of a 59-year-old man in a suspected bear attack near Waiparous this week has national park staff and the academic world offering safety advice and examining the circumstances of the incident.
David Lertzman had gone for a run near his home Tuesday evening but never returned. RCMP found his body on the Moss Trail near Waiparous Creek on Wednesday morning and Alberta Fish and Wildlife officers believe he was the victim of a bear attack.

Alberta Fish and Wildlife has confirmed 59-year-old University of Calgary professor David Lertzman was killed in a bear attack off Moss Trail near Waiparous Creek on Tuesday evening. “He was really a beautiful, unique, marvellous human being,” Jim Dewald, dean of the Haskayne School of Business said. “Professors will spend their entire career in the hopes that one day a student or graduate will come and say, ‘what you taught me changed my life.’.

Alberta Fish and Wildlife has confirmed 59-year-old University of Calgary professor David Lertzman was killed in a bear attack off Moss Trail near Waiparous Creek on Tuesday evening.

Police are investigating after a 59-year-old man was found dead near Waiparous Creek, northwest of Calgary, which officials believe was the result of a bear attack. Cochrane RCMP were notified of a missing person just before midnight Tuesday when the man s wife called police to say he had gone for a run about 6 p.m. and not returned. A search was then launched involving a helicopter and a police dog. Just after 2 a.m. Wednesday, the man was found deceased just off Moss Trail, which has been closed while officials investigate. Friends have identified the victim as Dr. David Lertzman, a senior instuctor at the University of Calgary.

It has been a difficult day for friends, family and colleagues of Dr. David Lertzman, the 59-year-old University of Calgary professor who lost his life following a bear attack near Waiparous.
