Bail at $1,000,000 for man who set van on fire | News, Sports, Jobs

The Maui News WAILUKU Bail was set at $1 million for a man who allegedly set fire to a parked van while a woman was sleeping in it, police said. Shiane Marumoto, 39, of Kahului was charged with attempted second-degree murder and first-degree arson. He also was arrested on a contempt-of-court warrant. Police and firefighters responded to the fire around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday while the van was parked fronting the Kenolio Recreation Complex at 131 S. Kihei Road. The van was engulfed in flames before firefighters extinguished the fire, police said. The woman who had been in the van told police she had noticed Marumoto yelling in the area when she parked the van. Shortly afterward, she fell asleep in the van. She reported hearing the passenger door of the van suddenly slam and opened the door to see Marumoto walking toward the van, police said.

Matthew Tittor WAILUKU A man who said he was going to stay on a beach when he arrived on Maui on a flight from Los Angeles agreed to return to the Mainland after he was arrested Tuesday for violating COVID-19 public health emergency rules. Matthew Tittor, 42, was sentenced to a two-day jail term, which he had already served, after he pleaded no contest to the charge Wednesday afternoon in Wailuku District Court. He appeared in court by videoconference from the Maui Police Department cellblock. When Tittor arrived at Kahului Airport at 5:02 p.m. Tuesday, he didn’t have a negative pre-travel COVID-19 test and didn’t have a valid place of lodging to self-quarantine for 14 days, as required under Gov. David Ige’s emergency proclamation, police said.
