you have this reconciliation, bill they will continue basically to be talking to everyone they possibly, can to make sure that next week does happen, you do see some kind of infrastructure vote, next week. so they don t have to go another week with these negotiations. like all three of us have been saying. it s about finding out where the trust. is making sure that they can, say okay maybe we don t have every single thing hammered, out but we promise we re not going to change, it in some vote-a-rama. and that is something that people in the house are extremely worried, about there are things in the senate that make it difficult, to believe that what you re looking at is going to be the exact test that will come out at the end of the process. and that s something they talked about being worried about. you also, have will be in november here pretty, quick but you also have to raise the debt ceiling, they have all types of things that they are going to have to do at the beginning of decem
at this point. yeah, that s right, hallie. and we re getting some breaking news right now that this vote that was scheduled for any minute, this procedural vote to lift the debt limit, is likely to be postponed. two republican senators have told us that, senator shelby and senator kennedy. we re waiting to get some official word from leadership, especially democratic leadership who sets the agenda. now, if that vote is postponed, that does mean there could be some developments, that perhaps leader schumer and leader mcconnell are in fact talking. now, let s talk specifically about what leader mcconnell has offered to leader schumer. now, he gave two options. one is to lift the debt limit for another eight weeks, give democrats some more time to do the process through the reconciliation process, but then the republicans say that that vote-a-rama, that reconciliation process, won t be painful, they
issues some democrats don t want to take. at the moment they re signaling we ll avert this crisis in the short term. but in the long term, a major question and almost certainly will be back debating this in a couple of months once they sign off on the details of how the short-term agreement will work. couldn t democrats, if they get their build back better reconciliation act together, and get 50 votes for that, couldn t they also put raising the debt ceiling in there and then just pass it with 50 votes and not have to worry about republicans? they could definitely do that, jake, but it would also going through that process, they d have to take additional steps, procedural steps to cast a series of votes in a marathon voting session known as the vote-a-rama. senators can offer as many moments as they want. often times very politically charged amendments aimed at putting their party in a difficult spot. they would have to go through
before the deadline. the other, which might be the biggest reason chuck schumer is reluctant to do this, you have to go through vote-a-rama, allowing republicans to bring a series of amendments to the floor that forces democrats to take tough votes on issues that could turn into political issues. slows it down. the parliamentarian ruled this week not to get into the woods. we re already there. keep going. if they do a reconciliation piece focused on the debt kr cei ceiling, it d limit the am amendments that could be brought to the floor. they prefer mitch mcconnell take his foot off the situation, say let it come to the floor, vote on it, and move on. for people who might have missed the beginning of the president s remarks, i want to play what he said specifically about the republican approach to obstruct on raising the debt ceiling. let s be clear. not only are republicans refusing to do their job.
they can do it that way. well, the problem is, is there s two things, and this is a purely political move by leader mcconnell because democrats do not want to do it through reconciliation. like i said, it s complicated, it s going to take time, and also they would have to put a number on the amount of debt they need to increase it by. they do it the other way, they don t have to, they can just suspend it. they would have to have a number attached to it which isn t good politics. another reason mcconnell wants them to do it through this so-called budget reconciliation way is because then it would invoke another getting complicated here vote-a-rama, which is 24 hours or more, very politically challenging votes that republicans would have to make democrats take. so all around, what mcconnell is doing is very good politics for him and his party and very bad
