reporter: the gunman opened fire, hitting and killing 67-year-old richard white and 64-year-old tony wallace. wallace s grandson was in the sanctuary at the time. the gunman just stood up and turned around to him. so probably like three feet away from my papa. it s kind of, like, heartbreaking, but sometimes you got to be strong about it and just keep on going. reporter: authorities say the shooter, seen here from a prior arrest, has had run-ins with law enforcement in the past. but they have not figured out a motive for the attack. kinnunen is described as a transient. but why he would take aim at innocent people at a church is a mystery. there were more than 200 people in the room at the time. at least six people drew their own weapons in the moments after the shooting. wilson trained the church s volunteer security team and no doubt saved countless more lives with his quick-thinking action. i see myself as doing what needed to be done to take out the evil threat. and marcu

six seconds. that is how long it took for armed parishioners to take him down, ultimately killing him. here is what the lieutenant governor had to say about that armed volunteer force yesterday. take a look. this church has its own security team. they were well-trained. this team responded quickly and within six seconds the shooting was over. had the shooter been able to indiscriminately fire into the parishioners sitting there in front of him or a pastor, we would have had more lives lost today. reporter: that was lieutenant governor speaking yesterday talking about the fact that these armed parishioners, the armed volunteer security team were able to spring into action and take the shooter down. now there are are still a number of questions today, francis. as of right now, officials have not released the name of the shooter. the fbi is part of this investigation. and they re working to figure out exactly what his motive was,
even though evil will be defeated, and i don t think, we as christians can live paralyzed by fear, i do think, this is going to be a wake-up call. what happened today will be a wake-up call to churches of all sizes to do whatever they can to ensure the safety of their members. large churches like mine, we have elaborate security plans. we have plainclothes policeman s, officers, all kinds of plans. i think small churches will realize they need a plan and the good news is, every church can do something. have a volunteer security team. be observant. half an evacuation plan. have some commonsense policies like we have of not allowing knapsacks or backpacks in the sanctuary. i think that s the age we live in and of today tells us anything, it tells us no church, regardless of size is immune from this kind of attack. how unfortunate is that aspect. absolutely tragic. to think you have children, five years of age who were slaughtered today, but i will say again to our viewers, this isn t
