they wouldn t give him money. witnesses say the gunman came in wearing a wig and fake beard before opening fire. abc s marcus moore in texas again tonight. reporter: tonight, new details are emerging about the suspect in sunday s deadly attack on this texas church. the church s pastor telling the christian chronicle the gunman had been to the church before, saying, quote, we ve helped him on several occasions with food adding that the suspect would get mad when they wouldn t give him cash. keith kinnunen, who witnesses said was wearing a fake beard and dark coat, gunned down 67-year-old richard wright and 64-year-old tony wallace, before a hero congregant killed him. the entire incident captured on the church s livestream. kinnunen had a lengthy criminal record, including arrests for assault in oklahoma, but a court ultimately ruled him mentally incompetent to stand trial on those charges. it is still a mystery as to why he went back to the church sunday with a shotgun. the cong

reporter: the gunman opened fire, hitting and killing 67-year-old richard white and 64-year-old tony wallace. wallace s grandson was in the sanctuary at the time. the gunman just stood up and turned around to him. so probably like three feet away from my papa. it s kind of, like, heartbreaking, but sometimes you got to be strong about it and just keep on going. reporter: authorities say the shooter, seen here from a prior arrest, has had run-ins with law enforcement in the past. but they have not figured out a motive for the attack. kinnunen is described as a transient. but why he would take aim at innocent people at a church is a mystery. there were more than 200 people in the room at the time. at least six people drew their own weapons in the moments after the shooting. wilson trained the church s volunteer security team and no doubt saved countless more lives with his quick-thinking action. i see myself as doing what needed to be done to take out the evil threat. and marcu

live from the scene once again. marcus, this congregation had been training for active shooter situations ever since a new law there was passed? reporter: yeah, that s right, whit. the law passed just a few months ago allows people to bring guns into places of worship. and this church s volunteer security team was formally organized after that law passed. the state s attorney general has called this church a model, and whit, once again, praised that hero parishioner for stopping this attack that lasted just six seconds. as you pointed out, could have been a lot worse. marcus moore, thank you so much. we want to turn now to the suspect in that machete attack at a hanukkah party in new york. he s now been charged with federal hate crimes. grafton thomas was already facing attempted murder and burglary charges for the stabbings at a rabbi s home. within hours, he was under arrest. and what authorities say they found in his car and on his phone led to those new federal charges. here
