New era of the distributed cloud heralds shifts in app development, data migration and IT complexity

help outline CLOUD SPECIAL COVERAGE: THECUBE ON CLOUD by Mark Albertson SHARE Nothing in the tech industry stays the same as products and technologies are constantly evolving, and the cloud is a living example. The cloud started as a place where enterprises could run key applications off-premises in secure environments. That transformed to a cloud native model where applications were built and run on the cloud platform. Now the tech industry is experiencing a third cloud wave, one in which containers and microservices enable app creation through tools provided by cloud and edge computing providers. “We’re in a transition to what’s called distributed cloud,” said Zeus Kerravala (pictured, right), founder and principal analyst at ZK Research. “If you look at modernized cloud apps today, they are made up of services from different clouds and d

F5 Networks acquisition of Volterra signals the rise of distributed clouds

SHARE With this week’s $500 million acquisition by application delivery controller supplier F5 Networks Inc. of cloud-native network and security provider Volterra Inc., F5 aims to create an edge services platform for businesses and service providers to deliver and secure “cloud” apps at scale. I put the term cloud in quotes because it’s the changing definition of cloud that drove this acquisition. As an industry, we’ve been talking about cloud for decades, but the reality is that cloud has gone through multiple evolutionary phases. The first wave of cloud was hosted computing where organizations would run critical applications off their premises in a highly security environment, optimized for performance. Even once these infrastructure-as-a-service services came to market, most businesses took advantage of them by performing a “lift and shift” of legacy apps. That provided cost advantages, but the application performed essentially the same.

F5 Networks to acquire edge-as-a-service startup Volterra for $500M

SHARE Network traffic management company F5 Networks Inc. today announced it will acquire “edge-as-a-service” startup Volterra Inc. in a $500 million deal consisting of $440 million in cash and $60 million in future consideration. Founded in 2017 and launched out of stealth in November 2019, Volterra offers a service-based infrastructure platform designed to help enterprises distribute their applications across public and private clouds and the network edge. The platform helps DevOps and NetOps teams ease their operational, security and performance challenges as their apps and data are distributed across cloud or edge environments. For DevOps teams, Volterra offers management of large sets of applications with less complexity while NetOps teams can simplify app-to-app networking and security across clouds.
