VIRGINIA â When fire damaged Pep s Bake Shop July 9, owner Laura Collins immediately thought of the couples who were getting married that weekend. Because their wedding cakes were in the garbage, she told the Mesabi Tribune. I felt bad for our brides. They were very understanding.
Collins was even going to take the cakes home and decorate them. But nothing could be removed from the building. It was a big disaster for a lot of us, she said of the fire that started in an upstairs apartment of the vacant building (formerly Stevenson s) between Pep s and Rocks the Jewelers, which sustained considerable damage. Virginia Floral next to Pep s also was damaged.
VIRGINIA â Last Fridayâs fire on Chestnut Street in Virginia caused an estimated $1 million in damages and economic loss, according to the Virginia Fire Marshalâs Office.
At the same time, the cause of the fire on the second floor of 316 Chestnut Street is being listed as undetermined at this time. The building at 316 Chestnut Street is a total loss, a news release from Virginia Fire Chief Allen Lewis said.
Damages stem from a direct fire loss estimated to be $500,000 from fire, smoke and water. There is an additional $500,000 in direct economic impact loss, as well, the news release said.
