A string of investigations into and penalties imposed upon Chinese internet companies, including leading e-commerce giants, in recent months signaled China’s seriousness about regulating its internet industry to promote fair competition and double down on monopolistic practices. The enforcement of the Antitrust Guidelines for the Platform Economy will strengthen the monitoring and regulatory capacity of financial and local industry authorities.

The State Administration for Market Regulation said on Thursday it has started investigation into Vipshop (China) Co Ltd and Guangzhou Vipshop E-Commerce Co Ltd for alleged practices of unfair competition.
The move came after the authority launched an investigation in December into Alibaba for alleged monopolistic conduct, which refers to forcing merchants to sell on Alibaba s platforms exclusively and preventing them from selling on rival e-commerce websites. Related Stories
