NEW DELHI:
Several senior Indian journalists are facing charges of sedition over their reporting and online posts about a protest by farmers last week, sparking criticism of the legal action from media associations.
The cases have been filed with police in at least five states against the journalists including Rajdeep Sardesai, a prominent anchor on the India Today television channel, and Vinod Jose, executive editor of the Caravan magazine.

At least nine senior Indian journalists are facing criminal charges for reporting allegations that Delhi police fatally shot a farmer in the head during protests last week, despite the authorities claiming no shots were fired.
Illustration: Ajay Mohanty The News Broadcasters Association on Monday strongly condemned the registration of FIRs against senior editors and journalists over the coverage of the farmers protest and the ensuing violence on Republic Day here, and demanded that the FIRs be quashed. Six journalists Mrinal Pande, Rajdeep Sardesai, Vinod Jose, Zafar Agha, Paresh Nath and Anant Nath along with Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, have been booked by police, including in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, over their alleged misleading tweets on the violence during the farmers tractor rally in Delhi on Republic Day. In a statement, the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) said it is of the opinion that both the print and electronic media have been covering the farmers protests on the outskirts of Delhi in a fair, balanced and objective manner.

Twitter freezes Caravan, Kisan Ekta Morcha, Prasar Bharti CEO accounts
The social media giant says it has withheld a bunch of accounts âin response to a legal demandâ.
In a surprising development, Twitter has withheld the account of the
Caravan magazine in India âin response to a legal demandâ. The accounts of activists Md Asif Khan and Hansraj Meena, actor Sushant Singh, Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar Vempati, Marxist leader Mohammed Salim, and Kisan Ekta Morcha handle have suffered the same fate.
Vinod Jose, executive editor of the
Caravan, said Twitter did not notify them about the move beforehand. âWe have no idea [about why this has happened]. We have no public or private information. We are waiting to know why they have withheld the account,â he added.
