PMC reasons that it’s the only source of income, as other revenue generation avenues closed in lockdown
The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown badly impacted the economy, with many losing lives, jobs and employment. The state government and civic authorities gave concession in stamp duties and also provided amnesty schemes to defaulter developers but refused to provide any relief in property taxes.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) also did not pay any heed despite demand from various citizens’ groups. PMC reasoned that it is the only major source of income to run the civic body.
PMC urges banks to provide loans to property tax defaulters
“So far, the amnesty scheme has helped the civic body increase its revenue collection from property tax by Rs 350 crore.
