Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has instructed officials to prepare a proposal for exempting property tax for flat owners residing in areas measuring up to 500 sq ft.
The Maharashtra cabinet on Wednesday approved a property tax waiver for residential units up to 500 sq ft for Mumbaikars. The move came just before the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation election and will benefit nearly 16 lakh residential homes in Mumbai.

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown badly impacted the economy, with many losing lives, jobs and employment. The state government and civic authorities gave concession in stamp duties and also provided amnesty schemes to defaulter developers but refused to provide any relief in property taxes.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) also did not pay any heed despite demand from various citizens’ groups. PMC reasoned that it is the only major source of income to run the civic body.
