Virar hospital fire: Kin of each victim to get Rs 5 lakh aid

Thirteen coronavirus patients died after the blaze in the intensive care unit (ICU) located on the second floor of the four-storeyed Vijay Vallabh Hospital at Virar in the early hours of Friday. Five women and eight men died in the incident.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday announced financial assistance of Rs five lakh each to the families of 13 COVID-19 patients, who died in a fire at a hospital in Virar of Palghar district. A statement from the Chief Minister s Office (CMO) said those who suffered serious injuries in the incident will be given Rs one lakh compensation each.

The outbreak has been blamed on a new virus variant and lax government rules allowing huge religious and political gatherings to take place in recent months.
The latest fire broke out in the hospital in the outskirts of Mumbai at around 3:00 am (2130 GMT), a local official told AFP. It has since been put out and the cause was being investigated.

Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said that the state would provide financial assistance to the affected people.

Hours after the death of 14 coronovirus patients from a fire in a hospital in Maharashtra, state Health Minister Rajesh Tope had asked reporters whether the matter would be taken up in a meeting with Chief Ministers of Prime Minister Narendra Modi today. “This is not a national news,” Mr. Tope said, referring to the supply of oxygen, the anti-viral drug Remedisvir, will be discussed at the review meeting of COVID-19 as Maharashtra accelerates matters. It is the most hit state, with a total caseload of over 40 million infections.
