Snapshot Agricultural production in China has been hit by drought and floods over the last four to five years. Another reason for China turning to India is that rice production in Thailand and Vietnam this year has been affected due to drought. India’s agricultural exports, particularly rice shipments, have been a revelation this year, when the country has been going through tough times due to the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. India’s rice exports have performed exceedingly well this year on both basmati and non-basmati fronts, with total shipments rising nearly 25 per cent during April-November period of the current fiscal, compared with the same period a year ago.

Two Indian firms bag Bangladesh tender to import 1 lakh tonne non-Basmati rice Bangla Tribune reported that the Sheikh Hasina Wazed Government’s Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase had last week cleared the purchase through the global tender costing $20.21 million. Subramani Mancombu Two Indian firms have bagged global tenders floated by Bangladesh to import one lakh tonnes of parboiled non-Basmati rice to overcome supply shortage and surge in rice prices. “Two Indian firms have won the Bangladesh rice import tenders. While one firm has bagged the first tender, agreeing to sell 50,000 tonnes rice at $405 a tonne, the other firm will offer another 50,000 tonnes at $416,” said Rice Exporters Association (REA) President B V Krishna Rao.
