CHANDIGARH: Arhtiyas in Punjab on Tuesday started their four-day strike against income tax raids, allegedly conducted to intimidate them for supporting the farmers stir against the Centre s agriculture laws.
According to Federation of Arhtiyas president Vijay Kalra, crop was neither sold nor purchased at grain markets in the state.
“Representatives of different farmers’ bodies had come to tell that the laws are good and are in the interest of farmers. They had come to urge the government not make any amendments to the laws,” Tomar said after meeting the two groups. “I am hopeful they (protesting farmers’ unions) will soon complete their internal discussions and come forward for talks. We will be able to find a solution successfully.”

NEW DELHI, Dec 21: A day after Income Tax (IT) officials conducted searches and served notices to 14 top arhtiyas (commission agents) in Punjab, the Federation of Arhtiya Associations of Punjab on Sunday, 20 December announced the closure of all mandis in the state from 22 to 25 December as a mark of protest against the IT action.
The association also stated that the commission agents will also “gherao” the offices of the officials, reported Indian Express.
Vijay Kalra, the federation’s president, alleged that action by the IT department was a “pressure tactic”.

Chandigarh, Dec 22 : Commission agents, locally known as arhtiyas , went on a four-day strike in Punjab on Tuesday in protest against the intimidatory raids by the Income Tax Department on them for supporting the farmers agitation against the Central farm laws.
The state has two federations the Punjab Arhtiyas Association led by Ravinder Singh Cheema and the Federation of Arhtiyas led by Vijay Kalra and both went on strike.
