Third annual Queer Bike Prom provides a welcoming opportunity for connection

Third annual Queer Bike Prom provides a welcoming opportunity for connection Photo by Sie Douglas-Fish. On Friday, July 9, Victoria’s third annual Queer Bike Prom kicked off beside the Belfry Theatre. Bikers dawned colourful formal wear, gaudy-fun drag fits, and casual rainbow clothing. The bikes themselves were also decorated 一 bright streamers and balloons filled the streets of Fernwood with colour as the promenade rolled on.   Afterwards, participants could either hang out in the Vic High field, play games, participate in a raffle, do a scavenger hunt, or compete in an alley race around town where racers had to take a selfie as proof that they had been to each location.

While Victoria High School s alumni fundraised for a new track, the school district leased the land –

Neighbours would play catch with their dogs on the field or jog circles around the ring. The bleachers were west-facing, meaning they caught the afternoon sun, so they were a popular place for picnic dinners from nearby food trucks.  But the stadium was nowhere near perfect. Graffiti adorned the crumbling concrete. Beer cans and paper napkins littered seats, and the field had patches of grass missing. Created as a memorial to the school’s alumni who died in World War II, the stadium was a local landmark albeit a grimy one.

Cedar Hill Middle School replacement budgeted at $46 5M

That will include more efficient heat pumps and improved ventilation in classrooms. The province is putting $42.9 million into the project and the Greater Victoria School District is contributing $3.6 million. Construction is to start in fall 2022, with students continuing to use the current school while the work is underway. Space will be provided for 575 students there were about 500 students in the past school year while a neighbourhood learning centre included in the project will provide space to such potential uses as child care and cultural activities. Programs offered at the centre will be determined through community consultation. The school was built in 1931 and has had a number of additions over the years, the latest in 1975. It is one of the district’s oldest schools, and served as the original Mount Douglas Secondary School before becoming Cedar Hill Junior Secondary School and then Cedar Hill Middle School.
