BC Wildfire Service urging outdoor burning caution during high winds

“As the temperature increases, grass cures and dries, making it extremely flammable, especially in windy conditions.” According to Environment Canada, winds will reach 20 km/h on Monday and Tuesday in Fort St. John. BC Wildfire Service says anyone conducting an outdoor burn must follow these precautions: Never burn in windy conditions. Weather conditions can change quickly, and the wind may carry embers to other combustible material and start new fires; Ensure that adequate resources are on hand to control the fire and stop it from spreading; Create an appropriately sized fireguard around the planned fire site by clearing away twigs, grass, leaves and other combustible material, right down to the mineral soil;

With wind in the forecast, Kamloops Fire Centre urges caution on open burning

The BC Wildfire Service is urging members of the public to not conduct any open burning until the windy conditions pass as wind can cause grass fires to spread quickly, as has already been seen earlier this spring. As of April 23, there have been 121 wildfires in B,.C., 30 of which remain active. Fifteen of those active blazes are in the Kamloops Fire Centre, which stretches from the Lillooet area in the west to east of Vernon and from the Canada/U.S. border in the south to Wells Gray Provincial Park in the north. It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that burning is done in a safe manner and is in accordance with regulations. Before lighting any fire, it is advised to monitor the upcoming weather forecast and check with local governments to determine if any local burning restrictions are in place.
