Hindu perspective of Guru Pournima Daily News (via HT Media Ltd.) According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Guru Purnima falls on the full moon day in the Tamil calendar, Adi. The festival is celebrated by Hindus all over the world in the Hindu month of Ashadha which generally falls between June and July. This year the Guru Purnima falls on July 23. Guru dispels the darkness, ignorance and illusions among the people and brings out enlightenment to society. The word “Guru” can be divided into two different parts. ‘‘Gu’’ means darkness and ‘‘Ru’’ means dispelling the evils, darkness and sins in society. The full moon day signifies the importance of spiritual and academic gurus who are imparting and enlightening the value of truth, wisdom, knowledge and discipline to the shishyas (students).
