The mainly wholesale business, which also operates cafes and roasteries in five markets, has been sold to Japanese beverage giant Asahi Breweries. The local arm of the company would not disclose how much the business had changed hands for, and founder Michael Allpress said he was bound by NDA to keep the amount secret. The transaction is expected to be completed in May.

CEO of Asahi Beverages Group, Robert Iervasi, said: “Asahi Beverages and Allpress are a great fit. We’ve been impressed by their premium branding, commitment to flavour, quality customer service and track record of growth – attributes that Asahi Beverages shares.” The coffee outlet was founded by Michael Allpress in 1986, and now distributes more than 1,500 tonnes of coffee beans annually worldwide. Allpress said: “It’s been an amazing journey but after 30 years the time is right for the business to go to the next level. The expertise, craftsmanship and relationship-based culture it has developed mean it’s very well-placed to take this next step. I can’t wait to see what’s next for the business and the team.”

Beer giant Asahi into coffee with Allpress buy Share Japanese beverages giant Asahi, which paid $16 billion for the Carlton & United Beverages beer business last year, has made its first foray into coffee with the acquisition of Australasian brand Allpress. Group chief executive of Asahi Beverages Robert Iervasi said the expansion into coffee would fill a gap in the group’s portfolio of non-alcoholic drinks, which includes the Schweppes soft drinks brands. Robert Iervasi, group CEO of Asahi Beverages, says, “Our intention is to run the Allpress operations as a stand-alone operation.”   But Allpress, which has been sold for an undisclosed price by three New Zealand shareholders who had run a sale process for the business as they headed towards the end of their careers, won’t be meshed in with the other products.
