Valley Santa saw an increase in requests for toys for children in need this holiday season as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but a record number of donors chipped in to help. Thanks to the many generous donors and a community-wide effort, more than 3,200 children in need throughout Luzerne County received Christmas gifts today. This marked the 37th year for Valley Santa. a program sponsored by The Citizens’ Voice and Standard-Speaker newspapers, the City of Wilkes-Barre, Boscov’s and M&T Bank. Attorneys Ruth and Kim Borland have served as coordinators of the program since the beginning and their children, Attorneys Sarah and Joe Borland, serve as active volunteers.

She asked for Valley Santa’s help in providing Christmas presents for her two children. She is one of many parents who said they are struggling to make ends meet and asked for Valley Santa’s help. Dawn, a mother of five children, said in her letter that she works but “it never seems like it’s enough to pay bills and food for my family.” “Any help provided will be appreciated,” she wrote.
