Howard University is only 13 months into restarting its men’s golf program, and coach Sam Puryear has to remind himself to be abundantly patient. Golf programs are not built in a day, and the team showed up to this week’s PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship at TPC Sawgrass still getting to know one another, having been on campus together for only 10 weeks.
Adding to the challenge, it had been so chilly in the nation’s capital that the Bison had been practicing in ski caps up until last week. But Howard, restarted largely because of the generosity of NBA All-Star Steph Curry, who committed to financially back the team for six years, and Puryear had some early signs that their first round might be special.

2020 Season
Ended the PGA TOUR season with 12 made cuts in 19 starts and failed to advance to the FedExCup Playoffs, finishing No. 136 in the standings. Recorded five top-25s, highlighted by a 17th-place finish at the Barracuda Championship.
2019 Season
Qualified for the FedExCup Playoffs for the second consecutive season and fourth total, finishing the season at No. 80 in the FedExCup standings. Claimed three top-10s and made 11 of 26 cuts, highlighted by a T2 at the CIMB Classic.
U.S. Open: Earned first career top-10 in a major championship with a T9 at the U.S. Open. Made birdie-or-better on eight of the 12 par 5s, tied with Aaron Wise for best in the field.

DORAL, Florida Korn Ferry Tour regular Shad Tuten opened his round on the back nine at Trump National Doral’s Golden Palm Course on Thursday, and he immediately bogeyed the hole and picked up another bogey on his fourth hole of the day. Despite the slow start, it was a birdie fest after that as Tuten shot a 6-under 65 under calm conditions to assume a one-shot lead over Colombia’s Santiago Gomez at the Shell Open, PGA TOUR Latinoamérica’s first tournament since it postponed its season in mid-March. Five players Spain’s Mario Beltrán, Argentina’s Andrés Gallegos and Americans Sam Stevens, Chris Wiatr and John Clare are all tied for third, two shots behind Tuten.
