Pair arrested after gunfire and failed Uber escape at Sunnyvale motel, authorities say

A man and a woman were arrested early Saturday morning after they tried to evade police and he allegedly shot at officers during a security check at a motel in Sunnyvale, authorities said.
Paul Garcia, 31, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer and an outstanding felony warrant for possession of a firearm, police said. Kyllie Lawson, 24, was arrested for a probation violation and several outstanding felony warrants.
Sunnyvale police were conducting a security check at the Motel 6 at 775 North Mathilda Ave. just after midnight Saturday when they encountered a suspicious vehicle, officials said.

An Oakland man and his 1-year-old daughter died in a suspected arson early Saturday morning in what police believe might be the latest in a string of possibly linked crimes.
Police and fire officials responded to what they described as an intentional second-alarm fire at a three-story house on the 9500 block of Stearns Avenue shortly after midnight. Officials said several people and children were trapped inside the building.

Bodies of two women found in vehicle that careened into river at Moss Landing

Two women were found dead in a vehicle that careened into the Old Salinas River at Moss Landing in Monterey County over the weekend, authorities said.
Officials responded to reports of an overturned vehicle in the Moss Landing Harbor on Saturday at about 2:40 p.m., according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle’s rear tire had become visible above the water line as the tide receded.
Emergency services and a dive team were dispatched to the scene, where they found two women dead from injuries sustained in the collision.

President Joe Biden plans to nominate former Richmond police chief Chris Magnus to serve as the commissioner of US Customs and Border Protection, according to a statement from the White House.
Magnus, a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, served as head of the Richmond Police Department from 2006 until 2016 when he began serving as chief of police in Tucson, Ariz.
