Dehradun: As many as 26 people are reported to be dead while authorities claim around 200 people are still missing from the glacier burst incident which wreaked havoc in Uttarakhand s Chamoli district yesterday. The search and rescue operations have continued in full swing for the second consecutive day in the higher reaches of the Himalayas.
A joint team of ITBP, Army, SDRF and NDRF entered the Tapovan tunnel for recce and tried to reach the trapped people. The team is found it difficult to make way inside the tunnel due to slit and dirt but nevertheless made a monumental effort to retrieve the people trapped inside the tunnel.
The analysis, spanning 40 years of satellite observations across India, China, Nepal and Bhutan, indicates that climate change is eating the Himalayan glaciers, researchers said.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been briefed on Uttrakhand’s Chamoli district flood situation and he is coordinating relief and rescue with Uttarakhand Chief Secretary, Union Home Secretary and MoS Home Nityanand Rai. Air Force and other disaster relief forces on standby.
