Mamata Banerjee criticised the Election Commission’s “inaction” on a day voting was marked by two deaths, sporadic violence, complaints of electoral malpractices and a high turnout, while the BJP welcomed the “free and fair” polling.
By 5pm on Thursday, some 80.43 per cent polling had been recorded in the 30 seats spread across four districts that voted in the second phase of the eight-phase Bengal Assembly polls.
“Since voting will continue till 6.30pm, the figure is expected to rise. The turnout is on the higher side; normally 80-82 per cent polling is seen in these areas,” a senior government official said.

Hours before polling started in the area, a Trinamool Congress worker was allegedly stabbed to death in West Bengal s Paschim Medinipur district.
Identified as Uttam Dolui, the worker was at a local club in Hariharpur in the district s Keshpur area along with a few others when around 10-15 people allegedly attacked him with sharp weapons, police said.
The incident triggered tension in the area.
A Trinamool Congress worker died after he was allegedly stabbed in West Bengal s Paschim Medinipur district in the early hours of Thursday, hours before polling started in the area, police said.
Uttam Dolui, 48, was at a local club in Hariharpur in the district s Keshpur area along with a few others when around 10-15 people allegedly attacked him with sharp weapons, they said.
He died on the way to a hospital in Midnapore, they added.
Dolui s family alleged that BJP goons attacked him to create tension in the area and intimidate voters ahead of the polling.

KESHPUR: BJP candidate from Keshpur assembly constituency Tanmay Ghosh s vehicle was on Thursday vandalised allegedly by supporters of the Trinamool Congress, police said.
Three persons have been arrested in connection with the incident, they said.
An unidentified group of people attacked Ghosh s vehicle with bricks and bamboo sticks, and also vandalised cars of media personnel, a police officer said.
A team of central forces have reached the spot, an Election Commission official said.
