Racist Zoom bombings have attacked virtual meetings on college campuses in Wyoming and Utah this month.
A public event hosted by the University of Wyoming via Zoom to celebrate Black History Month was interrupted by people spewing racist and pornograhic language and imagery. In Utah, racist hackers infiltrated a virtual poetry slam that was part of Black History Month events at Salt Lake Community College, and also disrupted a conference hosted by the University of Utah Dream Center and SLCC s Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office.
Across the country, and especially on college campuses, such attacks have steadily increased with more people working and learning virtually.

The University of Wyoming s Black Studies Center and UW President Ed Seidel held a town hall meeting on February 24 to address the recent racist Zoom-bombing attack that occurred during a live virtual panel on February 15.
The panel was organized as part of UW s Black History Month programming, and the topic was a discussion on the death of Tulsa s Black Wall Street. About 30 minutes into the discussion, unknown participants began voicing racial slurs, including the n-word, from behind blank screens. A graphic video depicting a violent assault was also broadcast. This particular kind of cyber hacking is known as Zoom bombing.

CASPER, Wyo. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the investigation of a racist disruption that occurred during Feb. 15 Black History Month discussion conducted by the University of Wyoming’s Black Studies Center.
UW Chief Diversity Officer Emily Monago described the events as a “racist attack” in a Monday, Feb. 22 message to the UW community. She also said the attack may be connected to other similar attacks seen throughout the country.
“The words and images were so disturbing, hateful, violent and offensive that they shocked and outraged our community,” Monago said. “Following the university’s administration’s statement condemning the detestable disruption and calling for a law enforcement investigation to identify the perpetrators and hold them accountable Gov. Mark Gordon also issued a statement of condemnation on behalf of the entire state.”
