Firm forced to start from scratch on £65m unviversity scheme
Bam has said it is hoping to reach a settlement on the problem contract which blew a hole in its 2019 accounts after the firm announced improved pre-tax profits for last year.
The firm said profit was up to £13.7m in 2020 from £9.4m after that number was hit by a problem job it is building in Sheffield.
Work to repair the piling was completed late last year ahead of the concrete frame going back up in January
Bam has previously said the entire concrete frame for the University of Sheffield’s Faculty of Social Sciences building, designed by HLM, would have to be torn down after problems were discovered with the piling.

Revenue at firm’s UK civils arm outstrips that of traditionally larger building business
Revenue at Bam’s UK civil engineering business outstripped that of its traditionally larger building arm last year as covid and other losses sent the pair’s Dutch parent nosediving to a €237m (£206m) pre-tax loss.
Income from Bam’s building arm slumped 16% to €894m (£777m) with the business, which recently signed the deal to build a new studios complex for Sky in Hertfordshire, racking up an adjusted pre-tax loss of €3.3m (£2.9m) from a €35.6m (£31m) profit in 2019 – although the division bounced back from an €18.3m (£16m) loss in the first half to turn in a €15m (£13m) profit in the last six months of 2020.
