Ravens and Wolves Square Off in Superconference Action

It’s an all-KCII area battle Tuesday night at Hillcrest Union in Kalona when the Hillcrest Academy Ravens host the Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves for a boys basketball contest. The Ravens enter the night with an overall record of 11-6, they are 9-5 and in third place in the Superconference North Division. They knocked off Highland a week ago 60-25 behind 21 points from Eli Ours as 10 total Ravens scored in the game. For the season, Hillcrest is led by Ours at 17 points, four assists and three steals per game. John Hughes pulls down a team best five boards per night. Winfield-Mt. Union is 8-8 overall and 6-6 in conference play, fourth in the North. They were 45-39 winners at Louisa-Muscatine a week ago with Cam Buffington scoring 21 points and Abram Edwards posting a 10 point 13 rebound double double. Ravens Road Rally Stuns Wolves

An all-KCII area battle Friday night saw the Hillcrest Academy boys basketball team put together a late comeback to beat the Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves 38-36. It was the Ravens that got out to the fast start, leading 12-5 at the end of one quarter and 22-16 at the break in the defensive slugfest. Out of the half, the Wolves dug in even more on the defensive end, using that effort to spur a 14-2 run that spanned the entire third quarter, holding a 30-24 lead going to the fourth. WMU was still up seven with four minutes remaining before the Ravens turned it on late to take the win. Hillcrest got big free throws down the stretch from John Hughes, who was four of four at the line in the final minutes and a jumper from Eli Ours in the last 20 seconds to give them the lead for good. Undefeated Wolves Ranked in Athletic Union Poll

The Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves girls basketball team is drawing attention from around the state with their hot start to the season. WMU is currently 8-0 on the year and ranked in this week’s poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. The Wolves check in at No. 11 in class 1A. They were ranked 14 th a week ago. Winfield-Mt. Union has wins this season over New London, WACO, Pekin, Danville, Van Buren, Central Lee, Mediapolis and Wapello. Kyndal Townsley and Bradie Buffington are the team leaders at 10 points per game. Buffington is the leader on the glass at eight boards per contest. Keely Malone has dished out a team best 2.3 assists. The Wolves are back on the floor one final time before Christmas when they meet Louisa-Muscatine in Winfield on Tuesday.
