The Hillcrest Raven baseball and softball teams are on the road for the third time this week tonight when they visit the Columbus Wildcats. The Raven baseball team is 3-4 on the year after seeing their three game winning streak snapped in a 9-6 loss at West Burlington Wednesday afternoon. For the year, the Ravens are hitting .304 as a team with an overall ERA of 4.40. The Ravens are led individually by London Schrock with a .444 average, 13 RBI and one home run. He also leads the Raven pitching staff with a 1.56 ERA and 1-0 record in nine innings.
Columbus is 0-5 on the year after a 16-0 shut out loss to Cardinal Monday. The Wildcats have been outscored 71-5 through their first five games. They are hitting .174 as a team with a combined 24 ERA. On the season, the Wildcats are led by Will Schwab with a .571 average. On the mound it’s Garrett Palmer with no decisions, six runs, four strikeouts and t3.00 ERA.
For the second straight game, it was late heroics that lifted the Hillcrest Raven boys basketball team to victory as they took down Danville Saturday 51-49 at Hillcrest Union. Fresh off of a come-from-behind win at Winfield-Mt. Union by two on Friday, the Ravens would find themselves in need of late magic after Danville jumped out to a 16-12 lead after the first quarter. The Ravens hung around, down just two at half, 26-24 thanks to John Hughes 12 points before break. Out of the locker room, the Bears would keep the Ravens at arms length, taking a 42-36 lead into the fourth. The Ravens had a handful of possessions down just two, but were unable to tie or take the lead. Out of a timeout, the Bears reeled off eight straight to push their lead to 10 with around five minutes left. From there, the Ravens snapped into action. An all-KCII area battle Friday night saw the Hillcrest Academy boys basketball team put together a late comeback to beat the Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves 38-36. It was the Ravens that got out to the fast start, leading 12-5 at the end of one quarter and 22-16 at the break in the defensive slugfest. Out of the half, the Wolves dug in even more on the defensive end, using that effort to spur a 14-2 run that spanned the entire third quarter, holding a 30-24 lead going to the fourth. WMU was still up seven with four minutes remaining before the Ravens turned it on late to take the win. Hillcrest got big free throws down the stretch from John Hughes, who was four of four at the line in the final minutes and a jumper from Eli Ours in the last 20 seconds to give them the lead for good.
