It opened in september of 2016, located on the National Mall near the washington monument, the museum has quickly become one of the most visited in the nations capitol with capacity crowds almost every day. We tour the history galleries which began almost three stories underground. I am a Museum Specialist and cocurator of the slave freedom exhibition, which is one of three exhibitions here in the history museum. We actually have three exhibitions in this gallery, and those exhibitions cover 15th century africa and europe all the way through today. Some of the things we include holding onto humanity in some of the most inhumane conditions. We look at the harsh reality but resistance and survival of a people. We look at how africans and africanamericans shape the world as well as by a nation. We look at how the
Historical society. The Washington County Historical Society purchased the house in 1967 from paris green. The house is built in 1853 by Jonas Tebbetts who was from New Hampshire but came to arkansas in 1838 to study law in van buren. And once he passed the bar and was traveling the law circuit, he came up into fayetteville and he happened to meet Matilda Winlock so he and matilda got married in 1847. In february of 1862, the confederates were being driven out of missouri and down here into arkansas. And as they were being driven down here in arkansas, they came through the town of fayetteville and decided to burn all the confederate stores and they threw open like where all the food was held and where the ammo was held and things like that and basically the soldiers just sort of ransacked the towns and said that some of the citizens participated in this ransacking, also, but it was a pretty dark time for the citizens of fayetteville. Those stereotypes have been developing for a couple of hundred years. They are strong and they stick with us no matter what we do. You go outside this museum and you travel around northwest there are fortune 500 companies, there is a Major Research university, there is all kinds of business and industry and high tech stuff going on out there, but these stereotypes will stick with us. It is part of our story. Later, we will hear the story of the family who was residents who were residents of fayetteville and how they were driven from their home during the civil war. This is a family that lived here and survived the war. The war affected them in many ways and they eventually had to leave the house because of the war. We are here for our fourth and final panel to discuss africanamerican opinions on the war. We want to begin with a discussion of the scope and significant. Maybe you want to get us started. The u. S. Color troops are more than anyone imagined. Massachusetts had three state registrants. There are over 140 of various kinds. They are a significant military force. What is interesting that i think in the beginning of the war none of the white northerners would have imagined you had black northern soldiers. They turned many patriotic northern freemen away. It is only the process of the war. The high death count, the sickness, and the fact that it did not go well. It prompted people to think about arming africanamericans. The emancipation proclamation was authorized. You had over 180,000 troops, which on one hand, people always say there were 2 Million Union troops, but they cam
